Happy Handy Man - February 28, 2007

by Johnnie Chuoke

I just got back from a show held right in Houston and boy did I find a product like no other I ever seen.  This is a caulk and a glue all together.  Let me just mention a few of the ways you can use it.  It will glue mirror tile with out damaging the backing.  It will glue on a damp surface.  It can be attached to a wall and it won't drag down the wall- it stays put.  It will seal cracks under water(water trough, bird baths)  It's paintable.  There are no fumes and it comes in 3 colors,  white, brown and gray and you use a caulking gun to apply it.  It comes with a screw on cap and cost 6.99  It's called T-Rex and it's made by Soudal.  Go to www.T-Rex-It.com and check it out.  Now to show you that I am not only a handy man, I want to share with you a recipe.  My goal with the article is to inform, illustrate and make it personal, so here goes.  I had a heart attack about 20 years ago and after that I started eating oats for breakfast to lower by cholesterol.  When I went on a vacation to Wyoming I came across this great recipe for oats, and I want to share it with you.  I hope you like it as much as I do and it keeps you healthy.  It's called good for you breakfast.
6 cups old fashioned oats
2 cups of Grape Nuts
1/2 cup of brown sugar replacement (sugar twin)
1/2 cup apple juice concentrate
1/2 cup water
1 cup raisins
Jonell (my sweet wife) puts it in a large plastic container, mixes it up and keeps it in the refrigerator.  I dip it out every morning and add milk and cinnamon.  Wow is it good- hope you like it too.

Now to the mail bag.....

Question:  Johnnie we had ceramic tile installed in our kitchen 5-6 years ago.  The installer told us we should not only put sealer on the grout but on the entire floor.  Well that's another 200 bucks.  Now the traffic areas are dull and the floor looks bad.  What can we do to remove the sealer and fix the problem?  We enjoy reading your articles in the Greater Houston Weekly.
Answer:  Boy do I wish you had e-mailed me sooner.  But there is still hope.  There is a product called Soy Gel and it will take the sealer off.  There 800 number is 800-538-5069 and ask them to send you a sample to try and if it works I'll tell you the nearest store.  After you get it cleaned up use a product called "Quick Shine".  It will instantly put a shine on the floor and then if it gets dull you just put a new coat on.  I put 1 coat on the floor a year ago and it still looks shiny.

Question:  Hi I wanted to ask you about a brick porch I have that has a cement look substance coming up from the brick.  Do I have to pressure wash it?
Answer:  Thanks for the pics, you can use a product from Selig called "Rust Remover".  Saturate the area and use a stiff brush and then rinse with clear water.  It's lime build up on the brick and the Selig product will take care of it.  Now you may have to do it a few times- but it will remove it.

Question:  I have marble tiles around my fire place that have fallen down.  The cement left on the fire place is very hard to remove.  What should I do?
Answer:  You are the reason for the lead article.  Use the T-Rex, it will stick to the old glue so you don't have to remove it.
