Happy Handy Man - December 13, 2007

by Johnnie Chuoke

I just love this time of the year because most of the year I spend going from one place to another and not really enjoying God’s wonderful creation.  The wonderful sunsets, the morning sun rises all the color Wow!!  You know in S. Texas it’s almost all year round.  But most of all people seem to enjoy each other so much during this part of the year.  I would like to take the time to tank you for reading the colum and I hope you have leanred something about fixing things around your home and passing what you have learned to your friends.  Things like how to keep your dishwasher clean, and how to make your natural wood cabinets look new again in 15 minutes, how to keep your drains and toilets running great for less than $10, and say good by to the plumber for those jobs.  How to wash your windows through the screens  no spots and how about how easy to get rid of oil stains on the concrete- you know all these things work.  And if you read the article every week, you know so much more.  I believe in this life that God has given us ways to share good things to help each other, and that’s not a bad way to live – right?  My hope is you and yours have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!

Now to the mailbag---hey don’t forget to order your Johnnie books before Christmas- www.Acmelumber.com and shop Johnnie’s favorites.

Question:  Johnnie is there a product that can remove any old dried paint such as latex enamel and especially oil based from interior area that have already been stained.  We tried oops but no good- keep up the great work!

Answer:  The best thing that I know of is Soy Gel- 800-538-5069

Question:  Can you tell me how I can get rid of soap scum around by brushed Nichol fixtures on granite and marble.  Every product I have looked at states not to use on granite or marble.  Also how can I remove soap scum and water spots from the brushed Nichol fixtures.  Thanks in advance.

Answer:  Stone Tech makes a product called Restore and it will clean that marble or granite clean.   It will probably clean the fixtures too.  But you can also use Delete Germ quickly on the fixtures just be sure and clean quickly and rinse completely.  You can also clean your shower doors this way.

Question:  I read last week column regarding Root Kill.  I have an old Bellaire home built in the early 50’s.  The tub is draining very slowly and I have had 2 plumbers come out to unclug the drain.  The say the pea trap is located underneath the foundation and they can’t get to it.  I was told they would need to dig under the foundation to the bathtub drop and demo the drum trap and replace the drop with pvc pipe and then replace the water and overflow.  Do you thing root kill would help in this situation.

Answer:  I am amazed at the answer you received but Root Kill is not the answer.  The product to open that drain is called Drain Out.  It cost less tan $6 and it will work for you.

Question:  I am a reader from the Memorial area and I have a mold problem on my reddish- tan colored shingle roof.  The roof was installed in Dec 03 and so it should not be showing such black mold.  The mold appears in certain areas of the roof and I have tried spraying a bleach and water solution on the moldly areas but it did nothing at all.  Can you help?

Answer:  The product to you is called Jo Max and here is how it works.  Put 1 pt Jomax , 3 pts Clorox,a nd put into a 2 or 3 gallon pump up sprayer and fill with water.  Spray the area that needs cleaning and then you might want to take a soft broom to clean with – then spray with clean water.  Job is done.
