Question: We purchased another home after Ike blew us off Galveston. It has a bath/shower in one of the bathrooms. The shower pull valve on the tub faucet will not allow a full flow of water to come through the shower head. It comes out about half from the faucet and half through the shower head. I have tried using WD-40 to loosen it to no avail- and suggestions other than new fixtures?
Answer: First it’s important to cut off the water at the street. Next we need to take the handle off and it should have an allen screw that holds it on. Loosen the screw and pull off the handle. Next you will usually see the stem, unscrew the stem. It is held down by what looks like a nut and get a pair of pliers and pull out the stem and clean it. Check the O rings and apply stem grease to the O rings and reinstall. This should take all of about 10 minutes. If you have solved your problems, great. If not, some faucets have a mixer valve- let me know and I will walk you through it.
Question: How do I remove a white cloudy stain on the surface of a wooden table?
Answer: There is a product called White Ring Remover, which you should be able to find at your hardware store.
Question: Thank you for your column which I read in the newspaper here in Houston. I have a question about a product which we can use to repair holes in our steel door put in there when Hurricane Ike come through our area. We put boards over the window and of course when securing the board nails punched holes in the door. Can you help us or are we doomed to buy a new door?
Answer: A real easy fix with JB Weld Stick. It looks like a 4” fat cigar and you cut off a bit and mix it like putty and then you have 5 minutes to stick it in any hole and then let dry and sand- your fixed!
Question: I always try to read your column. It has been quite helpful for me (a diy mom) I have rust under the tub faucet from an old drip. It has created some open cracks, is there a way to repair the holes and remove the rust? I fixed the drip!
Answer: First I congratulate you on fixing the drip. Good first start- the rest is easy. Clean the area with a rust remover just to get rid of the stain. Now tackle the rust, spray it with Rust Cure to kill the rust. (mask off the area you don’t want to spray) after an hour, wipe off the residue of the Rust Cure- now wait a week- the Rust Cure will turn gun metal grey. Now you are ready to take care of the cosmetic part. Get a Chip Repair Kit for appliances or sinks (they are the same) and fill in the cracks with the bonder part- then you can take the paint vile and paint over any area to make it look like new.
