Happy Handy Man - July 22, 2009

I usually don’t start off the article with a question, but in this case I am.  I think you will find it real interesting.

So good to have your article back!  My sister in Oklahoma had 2 storage units full of furniture for 9 years. These were not climate controlled so when she moved into a larger home she moved this furniture there. She thought that very little of her antiques and old pieces or anything else would be usable.  I went to help recover her treasures armed with “Howard’s Restore A Finish” and “Feed and Wax”.  You see I had been reading your column in our neighborhood newspaper.  The wood was so dry that carved table legs had split.  Many items were in pieces.  I generously rubbed or wiped it all.  My husband re-glued the pieces and we left to come home.  She wiped off the excess “Restore A Finish” and applied the “Feed and Wax”.  Weeks later we returned to see the results.  EVERY SINGLE PIECE was beautiful!!!  These pieces were of various woods and I used the Walnut color.  Thanks for all your practical help.

This is one of the many letters I receive but shows how great this combo can make your natural wood look.  Whether that be your kitchen cabinets, wood paneling, or furniture,  anyone can do this project, and you will feel great afterwards seeing how good your pieces can look.  My wife JoNell, loves these items.

Question:  I have a 30 plus year old house, and I am thinking about solar screens.  I know you favor the Gila window film and I have purchased some of their titanium film but have not put it on yet.  I think I will put it on the garage windows.  Also gutter nails popping out would caulk be a good substitute for the Minwax wood dough?
Answer:  I must tell you Solar Screens do a great job.  But they are not cheap. Remember MD makes a clear product kit that will seal your window and give you about a 4” dead air space for about $5 per window.  Please use the Minwax dough, it will hold much better than caulk.

Question:  We have a home that is over 50 years old and it has 105 siding on it. My question is would you use semi-gloss Coronado Paint or flat on the 105 siding?  Also do you know someone in Houston who sells Coronado Paint?
Answer:  105 siding is a great siding and the paint to use is Coronado Crylicote(it’s a semi-gloss).  It lasted on the Tower of Americans in SA for 20 years, and when they repainted they used Crylicote.  Paintco in Houston carries all Coronado products.

Question:  Hi Johnnie!  Recently I had an engineered wood floor installed. However I am experiencing all kinds of squeaky noise from different parts of the floor.  Is that normal?
Answer:  There is a product we use to secure a hardwood floor down and it’s called “Squeek No More”.  Most hardware and lumberyards carry the product.  It comes with screws, and a tool that goes on your drill.  The screws are attached down through the floor and into a floor joist.  Then they break off under the floor surface.  You can’t see them, you can’t feel them.  And your floor won’t make any noises.  Let me know if you can’t find the product.

Question:  How do I get rid of spider webs around my house?  The entire exterior is covered with spider webs.  I am sure I need to eliminate the spiders first.  My house is surrounded with T111 siding and painted.
Answer:  The best product to get rid of spiders, ants, and roaches is called Bengal Gold.  Most hardware stores carry Bengal.  It will last up to 6 months.

Question:  Do you know of any product that gets rid of rust in my bathtub?  It’s an old tub and the porcelain is worn.  At some point I will have to replace the tub or have it refinished.  But do refinished tubs look ok?
Answer:  You can get rid of the rust by using Delete Germ.  Then after cleaning use the Rust Cure on the rusty spots.  They won’t rust anymore in that area.  I have seen refinished tubs, and the last one I saw looked great.  They are getting better at spraying they epoxy.  But check around, and contact the BBB.
