Happy Handy Man - November 17, 2009

by Johnnie Chuoke

At the last hardware show in Las Vegas, I was winding down and going through some back aisles. And I came across an item that just caught my eye. Not because it was doing something miraculous, it was because of the name. Two Old Goats! Is that silly or what? It reminded me of the old cowboy movies that I love to watch, and the wagon rolls into town and the Snake Oil Man starts selling his elicsor. I couldn’t resist, I bought a display. And now I am on my second kit. Everyone laughed at me when I bought it, but they are not laughing anymore. It’s great for people that have arthritis, aches, pain and swelling in joints, tendons, and muscles. It also will moisturize your skin, and the fragrance is quite nice, kind of like eucalyptus. My daughter says it smells like a spa. Trudy talked with the salesman and he told her if you have serious pain, you need to use it about 3 times a day for a week until you get the pain under control, and then after that you use it as needed. I don’t know how this fit into the Happy Handy Man, but sometimes after we do work around the house, we get a few aches and pains- and now you have an answer. Two Old Goats. In a couple of weeks, you will find it on the website.

Now to the e-mail…..

Question: I wanted to take up my kitchen vinyl flooring and when I did, it left adhesive still on the floor. What it the best product to get it off? Second, once I get the adhesive off I want to etch the concrete to get ready to stain it so what do I etch the concrete with and is there a concrete stain that anyone can put down?
Answer: What a great question! You know people are doing this all the time. Especially those with allergies. So to get off the adhesive, use a product called Bean E Do (Soy Gel people) it will take any kind of floor adhesive up. Then as far as etching the floor, use Safe Solutions. It’s a salt product so there is no acid but it will clean the floor and etch at the same time. The stain for the floor is a water based stain and it’s called Mason’s Select (by Super Deck). Put the color you like on the floor and put a couple of coats of clear and wow!! I have ladies that come in the store when they are building a home, and do all the floors in the house. And they save thousands of dollars. Call me if you get stuck.

Question: Some of our old furniture got wet during the Ike storm. Will Restore A Finish bring it back?
Answer: It sure will. We got flooded out at Lake McQueeney one year. We used Restore A Finish and Feed and Wax on the furniture and made it look so much better.

Question: We have slippery floor tile in the bathroom, and my wife and I have both almost slipped. What can we do short of putting down those awful plastic tapes.
Answer: We found a product at the last Chicago Hardware Show, I went to. It was called Grip On. And when we opened up the hardware store this year, I knew it was a product that we wanted to carry. It will keep you from slipping in the bathtub, on the tile floor, and can also be used outside around the pool. You apply it with a sponge, and in 20 minutes you are slip free!

Question: We have a smell in the bathroom. We have cleaned the toilet, shower, but still sometimes we get a lingering odor. Why do you think that we get that?
Answer: Odor like that usually comes from the vent pipes. They do that when you have a blockage and they can’t vent. All it takes is a spider web and a few leaves to clog it up- just run some water down the pipe and it will open up.
